Migraine Headache

Often found as something a whole family may suffer from, migraines will often start when a person is very young. For many who suffer severe attacks, bed rest is the only option but normally with medication, the pain starts to subside within four hours or so. Most sufferers will confirm just how tiring an attack is even once it has passed.

Some sufferers only experience only one attack per year whereas for someone who is liable to frequent attacks, this in the range of one or two every month. Many of the symptoms experienced by sufferers are closely connected to other everyday illnesses. Migraine attacks only seem to affect people within a certain age range, just before puberty and stop by the time the person has reached about 40; although it is unusual for the condition to afflict anyone over the age of fifty.

Members of the same family are often cursed with migraine and there is believed to be a hereditary link; if there is a genetic reason for the attacks, medical science has not yet found this link. One area that does seem to have a connection is the medical condition where the blood vessels in the head can become swollen. Science cannot as yet explain why this condition is more likely to affect women than men but women have a three times greater chance of having the condition than men; however, the chance of a man experiencing the condition on a regular basis is only one in twelve.

Migraine with aura is a symptom where some sufferers are able to predict an attack up to half an hour before it happens. The signs for this attack seem to affect the senses and can include:

* Nausea is very common
* Vision is affected
* Loss in the sensation of taste
* Lack of sensation in sufferers extremities

other symptoms exist but these appear to common with most people. Some of these indications are symptoms felt by those who have the most common variant of the condition, migraines without aura; this progressively builds up to full excruciating intensity which is aggravated by continuous motion, light or noise often causing nausea and vomiting.

It is believed that conditions that cause the blood vessels in the brain to contract could be an explanation for migraine but this still hasn't been proved so the search for cause continues. If the blood vessels then expand suddenly, this may cause the intense headache; those who are afflicted say the headache is often so intense that it impedes with regular routinely daily activity and may even keep them awake. A sufferer could have one or more triggers to each attack; the most common complaints are highlighted below:

* Bad weather
* Certain types of food
* Traveling in a plane
* Drinks containing caffeine
* Strong bright lights
* Irregular or missed meals
* Anxiety

Sufferers need to monitor events that lead up to an attack if they hope to prevent them wherever possible.
